   The Chapin Branch of R&J is focusing on soccer balls and dolls but will take any toys.  The toys do not have to be new but we ask that they be in reasonably good condition.  We will be collecting until the end of February and the toys from all the 14 R&J offices will be delivered shortly afterwards.

CHAPIN COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY PLANS UNDERWAY
   Saturday, March 27th, will be the 10th Annual Community Service Day for the town of Chapin and we hope all of you are planning to be involved! Both project ideas and volunteers are being sought.  Each year, this has been a great way for area churches, businesses, and other organizations to come together for the good of the community.

MIDLANDS CINDERELLA PROJECT UNDER WAY
   The Greater Chapin Chamber of Commerce will be a drop-off location for the S.C. Bar Association's Cinderella Project.  The Project is sponsored by the SBA's Young Lawyers Division and by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
   It involves gathering donations of gently worn formal gowns, shoes and accessories for young women who lack the financial resources to buy a gown for their high school prom.
    Donations will be accepted at the Chamber House today through March 3 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Dresses should be clean and on hangers.
   Students from area high schools are invited to attend a boutique, to be held on Saturday, March 6, 9 am - noon at the USC School of Law.  Please bring your school id.

THE LAKE MURRAY ASSOCIATION HAS
CHANGED ITS QUARTERLY PUBLIC MEETING TO WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24 (not Tuesday, Feb. 23) at 7 p.m. at the Hollywood Ruritan Club in Saluda.
   Directions to the Hollywood Ruritan Club, 1459 Hollywood Road, Saluda from Lexington:  From Columbia Avenue, bear right on U.S. 378 W and drive for about 17 miles.  Take the first exit at the Traffic Circle, and then continue straight on SC 391 N/Prosperity Highway for 3.7 miles. Friday, February 19-Sunday, February 21. Battle of Aiken. For three days, reenactors eat, sleep, live and fight in a painfully recreated version of the world in 1865. Visit the Battle of Aiken for more information.

Sunday, February 21. Arboretum. Tucked away in a quiet inner city neighborhood is one of Columbia's most special places: the University of South Carolina's Belser Arboretum. It's located east of Shandon in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. This seven-acre tract has a long looping trail which makes the whole place accessible. Covered in wooden chips, the path goes uphill and downhill. It crosses a small wooden bridge, as well as a stream with four waterfalls. In the valley, there's a Zen garden with rock piles suggestive of a miniature Stonehenge. Volunteers have put up dozens and dozens of unobtrusive tags and plaques explaining it all. Unlike city parks, the arboretum is not generally open to the public. But on the third Sunday of every month, it opens its doors to the public for three hours. What a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Visit the Arboretum for additional information.

Sunday, February 21. SC Contemporary Dance Company: The Chemistry of Color. Choreographed by Miriam Barbosa, with an original composition by USC School of Music professor, John Valerio, this performance is inspired by artist Alvin Loving’s Midtown series. Tuesday, February 23. Jimmy Buffett "Summerzcool Tour"! Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band will return to Colonial Life Arena this weekend as part of Jimmy Buffett’s “Summerzcool” Tour 2010. Visit the Colonial Life Arena for more information.

Tuesday, February 23. Winter Performing Art Series. This free, family friendly, fun winter concert series will feature the USC Sax Quartet. The Columbia Children's Theatre is located at the Midtown at Forest acres (corner of Forest Dr. and Beltline). Visit Smart Arts for additional information.

"Crowns" is a moving and celebratory musical play in which hats become a springboard for an exploration of black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young black woman who has come down South to stay with her aunt after her brother is killed in Brooklyn. Friday, February 12-Saturday, February 13. Musicality: An Evening of Contemporary Dance. Using music from a variety of styles and influences; MUSICALITY, is a blend of soul, R&B, rock, house, hip-hop, and pop music. Choreographer Terrance Henderson explores another side of his creative process by making dances that reflect his love of music and the connection between the music, the dancer, and their audience. Audiences can expect to see dances choreographed to music by some of their favorite pop artists like Beyonce’, Jill Scott, Oasis, Gavin Degraw, vintage Mariah Carrey, Mary J. Saturday, February 13. 6th Annual About Face Face Off. South Carolina artists draw and paint portraits of one another in a head to head, single elimination competition. Artists 18 and older are invited to enter and are randomly paired, each painting or drawing the other’s portrait in the medium of choice. First prize is $500, and second prize is a $250 gift certificate to City Art. Two third prize winners receive a $25 gift certificate to the Museum Shop and a collection of exhibition catalogues. Saturday, February 13. Columbia's Longest Days. Columbia's Longest Days is a fun and educational day for the family sponsored by the Greater Columbia Civil War Alliance to commemorate General Sherman's March to Columbia, S.C. and the burning of the city. The day's activities will begin at 8:45 am with Union troops firing once more upon the State House from the West Columbia side of the Gervais Street Bridge. The day will continue in the atrium of the South Carolina State Museum with a Civil War Expo from 9 am until 4 pm. Tickets for the bus tours are $20 per person per bus tour. Saturday, February 13. "From Russia, with Love". “From Russia, with Love” stirs your Valentine’s passions and emotions with the music of Russia and France. Music Director Morihiko Nakahara presents much-loved music from 2009 Arthur Fraser International Concerto Competition winner Sean Yeh, performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The piece exhibits Ravel’s characteristic French elegance and exploits the full range of the piano. Book-ending Yeh are some of Russia’s finest: the Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky and the Rachmaninoff Third Symphony. It’s an evening you’ll be sure to love. Sunday, February 14. Art of Music: The Viola d’amore: Thomas Georgi & Friends. Love is in the air with the evocative and rarely heard viola d’amore – Italian for “violin of love.” Thomas Georgi, champion and scholar of the viola d'amore, presents a striking performance in the Museum's beautiful Baroque gallery, joined by Paul Miller, viola d’amore and Lucas Harris, lute. Tuesday, February 16. Masters in Beer Appreciation. Brixx Wood Fired Pizza at The Village at Sandhill is excited to be starting up it's beer dinners for 2010 and kicking off their 2010 MBA program. In the spirit of Mardi Gras, they'll be serving a Chicken Gumbo soup and a Cajun Jambalaya entree for dinner. The featured beers for the night will be from Abita Brewery and will include the following: Abita Turbodog, Abita Purple Haze, Abita Amber, and the Dixie Lager. Since everyone loves a great deal, they're offering dinner and a four ounce sample of each featured beer for only $10!
