Opening Thursday, January 28. Pounding Nails in the Floor With My Forehead. Trustus Theatre is reviving one of its most popular and moving Late Night shows, as Steve Harley returns to star in Eric Bogosian’s Pounding Nails in the Floor with My Forehead. Saturday, January 30. Magic Show at Cromer's. Cromer’s will kick off it's 75th Anniversary with a fun-filled day of magic benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities. Cromer’s will open its warehouse, which is rarely open to the public, on Saturday for two magic shows at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Magician John Tudor will dazzle crowds of all ages with unbelievable new tricks and old magic tricks inspired by those James Cromer, the second generation owner of Cromer’s, invented many years ago. Saturday, January 30. Auntie Karen Celebrates African American History. Auntie Karen Celebrates African American History with The Columbia Museum of Art, CSAM (Center for Southern African-American Music) & USC's Art Institute. This event is free however; museum admission applies to tour the museum galleries. The program features local performers specializing in jazz and gospel, poetry and visual arts. “The Shops at Auntie Karen’s Place” feature local vendors throughout the program. Saturday, January 30 & Sunday, January 31. USC Basketball. After this last game where the men's team defeated Kentucky by 6 points, who would want to miss a single game? Monday, February 1. Village Idiot Fundraiser. The staff and owners of The Village Idiot Pizza & Pub are hosting a fundraiser for the American Red Cross 2010 Haiti Relief Effort from 4 pm until closing. 100% of food and drink sales will be donated to the Red Cross, as well as the voluntary $5 donations at the door. They will also be accepting tax deductible cash donations. Not only will the Village Idiot be serving its delicious and famous pizza, but there will be live music featuring members of Columbia’s local favorite band, Shallow Palace, along with other guest musicians. Patrons will receive a raffle ticket for every $5 donation that will enter them to win great prizes, including an iPod. Visit Village Idiot for more information.
Thursday, February 4-Sunday, February 7. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus! Through the mystery of magic and the mastery of skill, audiences will be spellbound as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presents ZING ZANG ZOOM , a thrill-filled, mind-blowing circus spectacular where family fun is no illusion. Magical Zingmaster Alex and his assistant, Levitytia, lead audience members through an extraordinary world of fantasy that celebrates the uplifting spirit of the circus and also wards off the cynical Mr. Gravity and his team of Heavies who try to bring everyone down. Thursday, February 4. Daddy Daughter Date Night. Young ladies and their dads or grandfathers can enjoy this special date night together. The evening includes a candlelight dinner followed by lots of dancing, a memory photo and a goody bag. Space is limited and tickets must be purchased in advance. Ages 4-adult. $45 for couples, $20 for individuals. Crooked Creek Park from 6-9 pm.

MESSAGE FROM LAURA

Thank you to all who attended our Members Breakfast this morning! We had excellent turn-out, and a great speaker.  We especially thank sponsor Palmetto Graphix, host Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, and caterer Doza Rizen.  Our area’s entire Legislative Delegation was in attendance – Senator Ronnie Cromer, Representative Walt McLeod, Representative Chip Huggins, and Representative Nathan Ballentine.  We also were lucky enough to have both Butch Wallace and Bill Walker from Congressman Wilson’s office.  We appreciate how much all of these gentlemen are concerned with hearing the voice of the business community.

LOVE IN ACTION..  Explore Missions with CUMC Women and two great mission studies on Saturday, January 23 from 9 am to 2 pm.  Guest speakers include Rev. REMINDERS

     Saturday, February 6 -  Ground Hog Ball at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church Family Life Center in Chapin.  Gather at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center for dinner, dessert, drinks and a Silent Auction.  Music for dancing will be provided by “Not Necessarily The Band”.  Tickets are $50 per person or $90 per couple and are available at Generations of Chapin, Wilson Financial Services on Columbia Avenue and the Chapin Town Hall.  Table sponsorships will again be available for $1,000; $500 and $250.  The Silent Auction will feature merchandise and services donated by Chapin area businesses, organizations and individuals.

The Greater Chapin Chamber's January Members Breakfast Meeting Tuesday, January 19th, 7:30 a.m. Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church 101 E. Boundary Street, Chapin Catered by:  Doza Rizen Guest Speaker will be Darrell Scott, S.C. Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Government Affairs.  Mr. Scott will break down the State Chamber’s 2010 Legislative Agenda, and then take questions.  He’s extremely knowledgeable about current and pending state legislation, and will speak about issues including tax reform, economic development, education, and restructuring state government.  Breakfast is $5 per person (pay at the door).  Please RSVP to 345-1100 or laura@chapinchamber.com.

CHANGES AT THE CHAMBER Norma Hamer has stepped down as CEO of the Greater Chapin Chamber of Commerce.  She will continue to work for the Chamber part-time, serving as President Emeritus.  Her years of service to the Chamber have been greatly appreciated.  After getting the news of Norma’s partial retirement, the Board of Directors voted in December to change Laura Howell’s title to President/CEO effective January 1, 2010.  

 

MESSAGE FROM LAURA I’m so glad that Norma decided not to fully retire, but to continue helping us in our endeavors to promote Chapin, the Chamber, and our Members.  We’re really excited about 2010.  We plan to improve communications, add a few exciting events, and continue with our efforts to improve the Columbia Avenue situation.  I appreciate the Board’s confidence in allowing me to serve in this position, and will work harder than ever to serve the Members of our Chamber and the Chapin community. The Chamber’s Board of Directors will have its Annual Planning Meeting this Saturday.  The Board Members are all volunteers who give their time and talent (and an occasional Saturday) to the Chamber.  Serving on the 2010 Board are:
