Turkey fryers

UL considers turkey fryers to be dangerous to use presenting numerous safety hazards to consumers. "We're worried by the increasing reports of fires related with turkey fryer use," says John Drengenberg, consumer affairs manager of UL. "Based on our test findings, the fryers used to produce those great-tasting birds are not worth the risks. And, as a result of these tests, UL has decided not to certify any turkey fryers with our trusted UL Mark."
Turkey fryer hazards

* Many units easily tip over, spilling the hot oil from the cooking pot.
* If the cooking pot is overfilled with oil, the oil may spill out of the unit when the turkey is placed into the cooking pot. Oil may hit the burner or flames, causing a fire to engulf the entire unit.
* Partially frozen turkeys placed into the fryer can cause a spillover effect. This too may result in an extensive fire.
* With no thermostat controls, the units also have the potential to overheat the oil to the point of combustion.
* The lid and handles on the sides of the cooking pot get dangerously hot, posing severe burn hazards.

Important safety information

If you absolutely must use a turkey fryer, please use the following tips.

* Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors a safe distance from buildings and any other flammable materials.
* Never use turkey fryers in a garage or on a wooden deck.
* Make sure the fryers are used on a flat surface to reduce accidental tipping.
* Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do not have thermostat controls. If you do not watch the fryer carefully, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire.
* Never let children or pets near the fryer even if it is not in use. The oil inside the cooking pot can remain dangerously hot hours after use.
* To avoid oil spillover, do not overfill the fryer.
* Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles. If possible, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from oil splatter.
* Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and be careful with marinades. Oil and water do not mix, and water causes oil to spill over causing a fire or even an explosion hazard.
* The National Turkey Federation (NTF) recommends thawing the turkey in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours for every five pounds in weight.
* Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease fire. If the fire is manageable, use your all-purpose fire extinguisher. If the fire increases, immediately call the fire department for help.

The Chapin-Ballentine market area is located in the northwestern portion of the Columbia metropolitan area. It includes portions of both Richland and Lexington counties north of Lake Murray and south of the Broad River. The market is arranged along three major transportation routes (I-26, US 76, and US 176). The market includes the Towns of Chapin and Irmo, the unincorporated communities of White Rock and Ballentine, and most of the northern lakefront on Lake Murray. LAKE MURRAY ASSOCIATION PUBLIC MEETING
   The Lake Murray Association will hold its quarterly meeting Tuesday, April 20. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Lexington High School.
   The agenda includes representatives from the sheriffs’ departments in the four counties surrounding the lake. They will discuss free property checks from the water.
   Also, SCE&G representatives will be on hand. And, lake property owners will learn how to help prevent run-offs into the lake.

LIGHTHOUSE MARINA WELCOMES JASON LUSK
     The Lighthouse Marina welcomes Jason Lusk, the new manager of Lighthouse Marina. He replaces Stan Jones, who has accepted a position as manager of Charleston Harbor Marina at Patriot’s Pointe.
     Lusk has 10 years’ experience in marina management and boat sales. He worked at Lighthouse Marina from 1999 to 2005, when he left to pursue boat sales. Lusk was the manager preceding Jones.
     He is a 2002 University of South Carolina graduate. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Ballentine and are expecting their first child in June.
     “I love working here; it feels good,” Lusk said. “I feel at home.” Lusk said he welcomes everyone to come to the marina to meet him.

MIDLANDS CINDERELLA PROJECT UNDER WAY
   The Greater Chapin Chamber of Commerce will be a drop-off location for the S.C. Bar Association's Cinderella Project. The Project is sponsored by the SBA's Young Lawyers Division and by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
   It involves gathering donations of gently worn formal gowns, shoes and accessories for young women who lack the financial resources to buy a gown for their high school prom.
    Donations will be accepted at the Chamber House today through March 3 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Dresses should be clean and on hangers.
   Students from area high schools are invited to attend a boutique, to be held on Saturday, March 6, 9 am - noon at the USC School of Law. Please bring your school id.

Friday, February 19-Sunday, February 21. Battle of Aiken. For three days, reenactors eat, sleep, live and fight in a painfully recreated version of the world in 1865. Visit the Battle of Aiken for more information.

Sunday, February 21. Arboretum. Tucked away in a quiet inner city neighborhood is one of Columbia's most special places: the University of South Carolina's Belser Arboretum. It's located east of Shandon in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. This seven-acre tract has a long looping trail which makes the whole place accessible. Covered in wooden chips, the path goes uphill and downhill. It crosses a small wooden bridge, as well as a stream with four waterfalls. In the valley, there's a Zen garden with rock piles suggestive of a miniature Stonehenge. Volunteers have put up dozens and dozens of unobtrusive tags and plaques explaining it all. Unlike city parks, the arboretum is not generally open to the public. But on the third Sunday of every month, it opens its doors to the public for three hours. What a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Visit the Arboretum for additional information.

Sunday, February 21. SC Contemporary Dance Company: The Chemistry of Color. Choreographed by Miriam Barbosa, with an original composition by USC School of Music professor, John Valerio, this performance is inspired by artist Alvin Loving’s Midtown series. Columbia's Longest Days is a fun and educational day for the family sponsored by the Greater Columbia Civil War Alliance to commemorate General Sherman's March to Columbia, S.C. and the burning of the city. Monday, February 1. Village Idiot Fundraiser. The staff and owners of The Village Idiot Pizza & Pub are hosting a fundraiser for the American Red Cross 2010 Haiti Relief Effort from 4 pm until closing. 100% of food and drink sales will be donated to the Red Cross, as well as the voluntary $5 donations at the door. They will also be accepting tax deductible cash donations. Not only will the Village Idiot be serving its delicious and famous pizza, but there will be live music featuring members of Columbia’s local favorite band, Shallow Palace, along with other guest musicians. Thank you to all who attended our Members Breakfast this morning! We had excellent turn-out, and a great speaker. We especially thank sponsor Palmetto Graphix, host Mt. Our area’s entire Legislative Delegation was in attendance – Senator Ronnie Cromer, Representative Walt McLeod, Representative Chip Huggins, and Representative Nathan Ballentine. CHANGES AT THE CHAMBER Norma Hamer has stepped down as CEO of the Greater Chapin Chamber of Commerce. She will continue to work for the Chamber part-time, serving as President Emeritus. Her years of service to the Chamber have been greatly appreciated. After getting the news of Norma’s partial retirement, the Board of Directors voted in December to change Laura Howell’s title to President/CEO effective January 1, 2010.

MESSAGE FROM LAURA I’m so glad that Norma decided not to fully retire, but to continue helping us in our endeavors to promote Chapin, the Chamber, and our Members. We’re really excited about 2010. We plan to improve communications, add a few exciting events, and continue with our efforts to improve the Columbia Avenue situation. I appreciate the Board’s confidence in allowing me to serve in this position, and will work harder than ever to serve the Members of our Chamber and the Chapin community. The Chamber’s Board of Directors will have its Annual Planning Meeting this Saturday. The Board Members are all volunteers who give their time and talent (and an occasional Saturday) to the Chamber. Christmas Caroling in Chapin
Come one come all.... We'd like to extend an invitation to any and all that would like to participate in an evening of fun and fellowship. In conjunction with partners around Chapin we have planned an evening of traditional Christmas caroling. We would encourage our friends and neighbors to join us Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd from 5:30-8pm. We will be meeting on the 21st in the parking lot of Chapin Presbyterian Church located at 600 Lexington Hwy. And on the 22nd we will be meeting at Chapin United Methodist Church located at 415 Lexington Ave. We will enjoy a few minutes of fellowship and light refreshments before breaking up into groups and heading into downtown Chapin. We have 4 designated caroling sites: Hardee's, Boland's True Value, Trucky's, and Vella's. Santa will be at Hardee’s on the 22nd from 6 – 8 pm. We expect to spend a couple hours outside, so don't forget to bundle up. Warm up your voice and lets spread some good cheer. We look forward to seeing you there.

A graceful Southern city with many antebellum homes and college-town amenities, Columbia is a capital city with lots of historic charm situated along the Congaree River.
The city is home to the University of South Carolina, which provides entertainment and sports from the southern part of the clean, easy-to-navigate downtown.
The city has two entertainment districts: The Vista district boasts more than 50 restaurants, bars, hotels and condos, and the Five Points area is known for its nightlife.
The cost of living is low, due in large part to a median home price of $137,900. Winters are relatively mild, and there are only six days a year where the temperature is over 100 degrees. However, summers are long, hot and humid, and midsummer thunderstorms are frequent.
“There is a good bit of culture for a midsized city,” notes new resident “Tom,” posting on Sperling’s Best Places Web site. “I was pleasantly surprised at what a great place Columbia is to live.”
Cons: Columbia is a bit far away for air service and other big-city amenities. However, it is still within reach of Charleston and attractive beaches 120 miles down the coast, and Atlanta 200 miles west.

THE POTTERS OF CHAPIN© will hold their 10th annual Christmas Pottery Sale on November 27 through November 29 at the Chapin Chamber of Commerce Building next to Chapin High School. The sale will feature a range of ceramic arts from functional food-safe, microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe dinnerware to imaginative artistic show pieces. Each of the five Potters of Chapin—Judy Cox, Katy Brown, Adrienne Chapelle, Suzanne Sievers, and Penny Burke—specialize in different aspects of the ceramic arts, and this leads to a wide variety of pieces available for the annual sale.

For the last nine years, the annual Christmas Potter Sale has been held at Crooked Creek Park pottery studio. But the growth of the sale, both in terms of the variety of pottery being displayed and the number of visitors attending, has outstripped the capacity of Crooked Creek Park. For that reason, this year’s sale will be held at the larger Chapin Chamber of Commerce building.

Judy Cox is a nationally-known potter who enjoys creating functional cups, bowls, and vases decorated with devotional passages taken from the Bible. Judy also sculpts detailed porcelain figurines such as angels that are particularly popular. Recently, Judy has moved into making wire wall hangings depicting trees and other plants decorated with raku-fired leaves—a technique that produces shimmering and particularly colorful glazes.

Katy Brown is well-known for working with a special kind of clay known as “model magic”. Model magic clay is exceptionally lightweight and is especially well-suited for making Christmas ornaments. Before she began making ceramic pottery, Katy was a water-color painter. Many of her figurines and ornaments are delicately painted and very realistic. Katy and her seven siblings all attended the University of South Carolina, and some of her most popular pieces are Christmas ornaments decorated with a variety of Gamecock motifs.

Suzanne Sievers specializes in making trays and platters decorated with plant, animal, and fish motifs. Her fishplates and fishbowls are perfect for party appetizers such as shrimp, chips, crackers, and dips. More recently, Suzanne has begun making platters decorated with a variety of dragons—some cute and cuddly, and others fierce and fiery. Like all the Potters of Chapin, Suzanne will make functional pottery such as matched mixing bowls to the specifications of individual cooks, which is a great way to personalize any kitchen.

While functional pottery that can be used daily in the home is important, the clay arts are also a medium for personal artistic expression. When Penny Burke begins to make a piece such as a hand-built platter she says “I simply begin by visualizing a desired shape, folding and pressing in ways suggested by the feel of the clay. The marks and fingerprints, which remain on the piece, tell a story of that day’s practice. The clay is what tells me when the piece is ready.” Penny’s particular interest is in making functional pieces with an outdoorsy, natural feel.

Adrienne Chapelle, who is also an accomplished cook, makes casserole dishes and pie pans designed to produce pre-selected food portions. She says “as my kids have grown up and headed off to college—especially the boys—my casseroles, quiches, and pie pans don’t need to be as large as they used to be. If you’re a potter, that’s no problem. You just make the size you need.” One of Adrienne’s favorite things to do is create matched sets dinnerware—plates, coffee-tea cups, salad bowls, and soup bowls—to the specifications of individual clients.

The art of ceramic pottery has always served the dual human need for functionality and beauty. People need cups and bowls and plates for everyday use, and these can easily be bought at any department store. But there is something special about these every-day articles when they have been formed, decorated and fired by local skilled artisans. This is what will be on display during the Potter’s of Chapin Annual Christmas sale.

Chapin's No. 1 singles player, a seventh-grader, often faces opponents who are stronger and several years older than her.
"It can be intimidating at first, but once we start playing all of that goes away," Fuller said. "I just kind of, like, disappear. It's really fun to get into that zone."

As many of us get ready for this potentially fun-filled night, it is also important to remain aware of some key safety tips.....

(Sheriff) "Metts urges parents to take simple precautions to protect their children on Halloween:

* A parent or another responsible adult should accompany children while they go door-to-door to fill their goody bags.

* Children should visit only the homes of neighbors whom their parents, other relatives or friends know.

* Children should not visit homes where no lights are on. Most people who have candy and other items available to give out to young ghosts and goblins will turn on their exterior lights as a sign that children are welcome.

* Parents should select costumes for their children that do not obstruct the children’s vision or the children’s ability to run or walk. Children must be able to see well and walk well while crossing streets in neighborhoods to trick or treat.

* Motorists must be able to see children who are wearing costumes, and parents should provide their children with flashlights or objects that emit or reflect light. Costumes that are light colored will be most visible at night.

* When children return home with overflowing goody bags, parents should inspect all candy and other items to make sure that they have not been tampered with. If an item appears to be suspicious, you should throw it away.

Many churches and civic groups sponsor festivals at Halloween, Metts said. Such festivals offer games and other activities for children in a safe, controlled environment."

     Your Chamber is a member of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, and also its Small Business Committee. We, along with other chambers throughout the state, assist the S.C. Chamber in forming and publicizing their legislative agenda for our state's business interests each year. The State Chamber then lobbies the State Legislature and other bodies/entities on behalf of business and economic development.
     This is an opportunity for small business and small Chambers to have a voice in impacting legislation and policy which affect us, such as taxation, healthcare, infrastructure, workforce development, energy, environment, and immigration.

Chapin Elementary Groundbreaking on Sept. 30
Chapin Elementary will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for their new building at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30. The public is invited to attend.

Grant to Chapin Middle School (as noted in the Chapin Times)
Chapin Middle Students are enjoying new books this year thanks to a grant from the Chapin Woman’s Club. “Nothing thrills our language arts teachers and students more than the smell of new books,” said language arts teacher Roselyne Thomas.
“”I’m so glad we could provide these books to the language arts department,” said Patsy Grimes of the Chapin Woman’s Club. “They are a very hard working group of dedicated professionals, and we are happy to do whatever we can to help them out.”

Golf Tournament planned for October 17
Chapin United Methodist invites you to play in their Golf Tournament on Saturday, October 17. There will be a 12 noon Shotgun Start with Captain’s Choice 4-person teams. Singles are welcome. Fee is $60 per golfer, which includes a deli style buffet after the tournament. Proceeds to go to the church building fund.

American Red Cross Golf Tournament
Servpro of The Dutch Fork is sponsoring a golf tournament on November 2, 2009 at Golden Hills Country Club to benefit the American Red Cross. All proceeds will go directly to our local chapter of the American Red Cross. We are hoping to make this a yearly event. The Parish Nurse Ministry of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin will be offering seasonal flu vaccines on Sunday, October 4, 2009, from 11:00 am until 1:30 PM in the Family Life Center. No appointments are necessary. In order to receive the vaccine, you must be 18 years of age or older. The cost is $25, unless you have Medicare. Medicare recipients will receive the vaccine at no charge (Medicare card required). Our Lady of the Lake is located at 195 Amicks Ferry Rd. in Chapin. Chapin High Named National Blue Ribbon School
Chapin High School has been named a 2009 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School by United States Department of Education. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private K-12 schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement.

Only five schools in South Carolina received the award. The U.S. Department of Education says that schools chosen as National Blue Ribbon recipients are models of excellence that other schools can emulate.
The 16th annual "FBI AGENTS ASSOCIATION CHILDREN'S CLASSIC" golf tournament will be held MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2009, at the Woodlands Country Club, 100 Norse Way, Columbia, South Carolina. The tournament benefits the Memorial College Education Fund, which awards college scholarships to children and spouses of FBI Agents who died (from any cause) while on active duty, or died within one year after retirement from the FBI. As of January, 2009, the fund has assisted 150 children of 83 deceased FBI Agents. Thanks to your efforts and generosity, we have raised nearly $300,000 since the inception of this event. We ask your help for this worthy cause by being a player participant, a sponsor, a contributor, a volunteer, and/or a donor of an item for the auction at the party following the golf tournament. The single player fee is $175 and includes green and cart fees, a gift package, and an invitation to the Sunday evening reception, and the auction and dinner following the tournament. Special package deals include a Gold Sponsorship, Silver Sponsorship, Green/Tee or Putting Green Sponsor, and a Foursome Discount.
